Kai awakens to find herself in an unknown med bay separated from her ship, the Quarp Jet. If you haven’t played either one then there is a prologue that will give just enough information of past events to tell you Kai was put in a very bad spot at its end while leading into the new story. Players once again resume the role of Lieutenant Kai Tana after the events of Ultra or the original depending on which you one you’ve played. I loved Velocity and its upgraded version Velocity Ultra so much that I’m absolutely thrilled to review Velocity 2X, the newest addition to the Vita library.īuilding upon the success of Velocity Ultra, FuturLab has sent things into terminal velocity with the release of Velocity 2X, which adds a whole new gameplay element to the space puzzle shooter while still maintaining the fast-paced addictive nature of Ultra that I know and love. My biggest exposure to FuturLab’s work comes in the form of the Velocity franchise which has been a downright amazing and addicting experience so far. Among those developers is the award-winning studio FuturLab based in Brighton, UK who develop almost exclusively for Sony’s PlayStation line of consoles and handhelds. However, if you don't have a Switch and prefer other platforms, by all means, those should be just as viable as well.ĭisclaimer: We were provided a digital copy of Velocity 2X for the Nintendo Switch before writing this review.There are very few game developers that I hold in high regard, each for different reasons, but ultimately because they create wonderful games. The Switch release feels great with the HD vibrations and the option to swap between a television and the palm of your hand with ease. Whether you play it casually to beat the stages or play it to 100 percent, you're going to find a rewarding experience inside. So, consider this a huge thumbs up for Velocity 2X. For a simple arcade game, it packs a ton of replayability and depth, and it never fails to deliver that arcade rush you're looking for. The soundtrack is the heartbeat of the Velocity series, and without it, it just wouldn't be the same.
That goes without saying for some games, but it deserves a mention here. It is not a guaranteed thing like in the AAA market.įuturlab also dresses up its layers upon layers of mechanics in a lovely sci-fi art style with brilliant graphic effects and a killer soundtrack. That's how arcade classics go, and in turn, that's how Velocity 2X goes.
Memorizing a level perfectly requires many attempts, flawless execution, and yes, inevitable heartbreak when you're one survivor short or a split second too late across the finish line. 100 percent in Velocity 2X is only going to come to the most dedicated fan.

It's one of the most intense action games on the indie market to date, but unlike most arcade-inspired games that require little more than twitch skills and pattern memorization, Velocity 2X dares to be smarter with its level design and multiple objectives within each level.Īnd thank goodness that it doesn't rely on randomized levels or procedural generation. The flow will come to those who earn it, and when you hit that stride, Velocity 2X delivers that same rush and excitement as the arcade classic SHMUPS and run 'n' guns that inspired it. Before you know it, you'll be blazing through the stars in your ship, teleporting through walls, rescuing survivors by blasting open their glass cages with multi-directional bombs, docking into space ports, raiding enemy ships for crystals, engaging in epic laser fights with aliens, blasting open locked gates… in the ship, out of the ship, in the ship, FIRE FIRE FIRE, teleport through that wall, out of the ship, blast the lock, blow the base up, kill the boss, escape…
